The secretarial and office support job market will see increased levels of hiring across all regions in quarter four, according to the latest quarterly Secretarial & Business Support Job Market Update released today by recruitment consultancy Robert Walters.

According to the update, demand for secretarial and business support staff will rise across most sectors in quarter four, due to business growth and employers seeking to secure staff before the holiday season. However, the mining, engineering, construction, financial planning and utilities sectors are expected to see the highest levels of hiring.

The Job Market Update also notes that there will be skills shortages across a number of areas, including project administrators and secretaries, desktop publishers, receptionists and office juniors. In addition, there will be high demand for customer service staff, contracts and procurement specialists and legal secretaries.

Robert Walters’ Manager of Secretarial & Business Support Recruitment, Matthew Passerini, adds, ‘Salaries are also expected to rise across most areas, but particularly for the professionals with in-demand skill sets such as project staff.

“In Brisbane in particular, salary levels will increase significantly in the boom industries, especially for the more experience candidates and quality project secretaries, contracts and procurement specialists and site professionals. Organisations outside the boom industries may struggle to match the salaries offered in these sectors and could see high turnover of staff as a result.”

Passerini also notes that due to the holiday season, recruitment in some regions could be focused more on contract/temporary roles, so job-seekers looking for permanent roles may struggle.

“We’re particularly expecting that candidates in the Sydney market could face increased competition for roles as more Australians return from Europe for the summer, so these candidates may have to be more open to temp-to-perm roles.”
