An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dedicated Accounting Officer to join a highly respected public sector department based in the heart of Adelaide CBD. This role is perfect for someone who thrives in a collaborative environment, values diversity, and is passionate about supporting the financial operations that underpin essential superannuation services. The organisation is committed to flexible working arrangements, ensuring you can balance your professional and personal commitments with ease. As an Accounting Officer, you will play a pivotal part in delivering accurate and timely financial services, contributing directly to the success of a team that values inclusivity, continuous improvement, and the highest standards of integrity. If you are looking for a position where your attention to detail, analytical mindset, and interpersonal skills will be truly valued—and where your work will have a meaningful impact on the community—this could be the ideal next step in your career.

  • Enjoy flexible working opportunities within a supportive public sector environment that actively promotes diversity and inclusion at every level.
  • Be part of a knowledgeable team where your expertise in accounting and financial operations will contribute directly to the delivery of vital superannuation services.
  • Benefit from ongoing training opportunities and exposure to government finance practices, helping you grow both personally and professionally while making a real difference.

What you'll do:

As an Accounting Officer, you will immerse yourself in a variety of tasks that are central to the effective functioning of financial services within this public sector department. Your day-to-day activities will see you collaborating closely with colleagues across different teams to ensure seamless coordination of financial processes. You will be responsible for facilitating critical payments related to superannuation benefits, maintaining accurate records through diligent journal processing, and reconciling complex transactions. Your ability to provide sound advice to both internal teams and external stakeholders will be key in building trusted relationships. Additionally, you will play an important role in preparing comprehensive reports for both internal use and regulatory compliance. By contributing to policy development and process improvements, you will help shape best practice standards that benefit not only your immediate team but also the wider organisation. Success in this role comes from your commitment to accuracy, your proactive approach to problem-solving, and your willingness to share knowledge within a supportive team environment.

  • Facilitate the payment of superannuation and pension benefits by managing electronic transfers from administration systems and ensuring accurate receipt of contribution monies.
  • Process general ledger journals with precision, maintaining up-to-date records that support robust financial management across all business units.
  • Monitor and ensure the timely recording and banking of all superannuation funds, safeguarding the integrity of financial transactions.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and other superannuation-related transactions regularly to maintain accuracy and compliance with internal controls.
  • Maintain various registers meticulously, ensuring all data is current and accessible for audit or operational purposes.
  • Coordinate requests for invoices, including raising, coding, and processing payments efficiently to support smooth business operations.
  • Provide clear advice to internal clients and external stakeholders on financial matters, fostering strong relationships built on trust and understanding.
  • Liaise with external partners regarding daily unit pricing activities, ensuring all information is communicated accurately and promptly.
  • Assist in preparing regular internal and external reports as well as data required for regulatory reporting periods, meeting statutory obligations with diligence.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of procedure, policy, and enterprise architecture documents so they reflect current operational practices.

What you bring:

To excel as an Accounting Officer in this setting, you will bring proven experience from similar roles where you have managed complex financial operations with care and precision. Your background should include hands-on involvement in preparing comprehensive reports, interpreting data sets for varied audiences, and applying accounting principles within structured frameworks. You are known for your excellent communication style—able to explain technical concepts clearly while nurturing positive working relationships across teams. Your approach is methodical yet adaptable; you thrive when balancing multiple responsibilities without compromising quality or deadlines. A keen awareness of legislative requirements ensures your work always aligns with best practice standards around ethics, equity, safety, cultural inclusion, and risk management. If you hold additional qualifications such as RG146 accreditation or have worked extensively with government systems or superannuation products before, these experiences will further enhance your suitability for this rewarding position.

  • Demonstrated experience working within a financial operations environment where accuracy and timeliness are paramount.
  • Proven ability to analyse, interpret, and present complex data clearly using logical frameworks that support informed decision-making.
  • Experience preparing detailed financial statements as well as management reports tailored for diverse audiences.
  • Sound knowledge across a broad range of accounting functions coupled with familiarity with relevant accounting standards applicable in government settings.
  • A solid understanding of government administrative practices along with awareness of relevant legislation such as Equal Opportunity laws and Work Health & Safety requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills complemented by high-level interpersonal abilities that enable you to collaborate effectively within teams and build positive stakeholder relationships.
  • Strong organisational skills demonstrated by your capacity to manage competing priorities independently while consistently meeting deadlines.
  • Effective analytical thinking combined with initiative and sound judgement when addressing challenges or identifying process improvements.
  • Awareness of risk management principles (AS/NZS ISO 31000) as they apply within public sector environments.
  • Desirable: RG146 Accreditation for Superannuation Industry or tertiary qualifications in Accounting/Business/Commerce; experience with government financial systems; proficiency in Microsoft Office applications including spreadsheets; familiarity with web-based banking platforms; knowledge of superannuation schemes administered by Super SA.
