Middle Office Associate

Save job

The opportunity to work closely with front office traders and brokers in a fast-paced, high-performance environment. The role requires strong technical product knowledge, with exposure to derivatives, equities, futures or swaps essential. You’ll operate under pressure, ensuring seamless trade support and accuracy, with excellent progression opportunities and the chance to build your career within a highly respected, industry-leading business

What you'll do:

As a Middle Office Associate in Sydney, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the daily functions of the trading desk. Your responsibilities will span compiling trade data, preparing delivery instructions for proprietary transactions, managing operational processes in line with regulatory requirements, and updating critical trading systems. You will act as a key point of contact between traders and other stakeholders—ensuring effective communication for order execution. By running desk projects focused on technology-driven improvements and supporting post-trade actions such as reporting or error resolution, you will help drive operational excellence. Success in this role requires meticulous attention to detail, adaptability in a fast-moving environment, and a genuine interest in learning from experienced professionals. Your day-to-day tasks will be varied but always centred around supporting the team’s ability to deliver accurate results efficiently.

  • Compile and reconcile trade, transaction, and position data with precision to ensure accuracy across all trading activities.
  • Prepare and submit delivery instructions for proprietary trading operations while maintaining compliance with regulatory frameworks.
  • Assist traders by maintaining position records, profit and loss reports, and facilitating information exchange between internal departments.
  • Manage operational processes according to exchange regulations, ensuring all procedures meet compliance standards.
  • Utilise algorithmic trading tools under trader instruction to support efficient execution of trades.
  • Update and manage exchange trading systems, proprietary applications, and Excel spreadsheets to maintain up-to-date records.
  • Act as liaison between desk traders, dealers, brokers, and other internal teams to facilitate seamless communication and order execution.
  • Run desk projects and initiatives that enhance operational efficiency through technology, automation, or process improvements.
  • Support ongoing pricing and execution for high-touch sales flows while facilitating post-trade actions such as trade recapping, error resolution, and client relationship management.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement efforts within the Front Office team by identifying opportunities for technological advancement or workflow optimisation.

What you bring:

The ideal Middle Office Associate brings proven experience from the financial services sector along with relevant academic background in finance or investments. Your expertise spans equities and derivatives markets coupled with advanced proficiency in Excel; additional skills in Python or SQL further strengthen your candidacy. You possess outstanding communication abilities that foster effective relationships across teams. Attention to detail is second nature—enabling you to juggle multiple responsibilities without compromising accuracy. Your resourceful approach means you are quick to learn new concepts while remaining humble enough to seek advice when needed. Dependability is at your core: colleagues trust you to support them reliably during high-pressure moments. Flexibility allows you to adapt seamlessly as operational needs shift throughout the day. Above all, your commitment to teamwork ensures that every task contributes positively toward shared goals.

  • Previous experience in the financial services industry is highly desirable; completion of finance or investment-related coursework is considered advantageous.
  • Thorough knowledge of equity instruments as well as equity derivatives is essential for effective performance in this role.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite—especially Excel—is required; familiarity with Python or SQL is preferred for handling complex data sets.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are necessary for interacting effectively across all levels of the organisation.
  • Meticulous attention to detail enables you to handle multiple tasks accurately within a highly intellectual environment.
  • Resourcefulness in problem-solving combined with a willingness to ask questions ensures you can adapt quickly when faced with new challenges.
  • Dependable team player with a positive demeanour who thrives on supporting others within a collaborative setting.
  • Ability to maintain composure under pressure while managing competing priorities during busy trading sessions.
  • Humble attitude towards learning—openly acknowledging what you do not know—and eagerness to seek guidance from colleagues when needed.
  • Flexibility in moving throughout the trading floor as required by operational demands.
