Case Review Officer
Our Ombudsman client is seeking an experienced and highly analytical Review Officer to join their Reviews & Complex Cases team on a 12-month maximum term contract.
This is not a high-volume investigations role. It sits at the end of the dispute resolution process — focused on complex reviews, appeals, jurisdiction queries and drafting binding decisions that must stand up to regulatory scrutiny and, at times, court challenge.
If you thrive on dense, analytical work and writing clear, defensible decisions grounded in administrative law principles, this is an exceptional opportunity.
The Role
Reporting to the Manager, Reviews & Complex Cases, you will:
-
Draft binding decisions under delegation
-
Review decisions to stop handling matters and manage jurisdiction queries
-
Triage cases escalated to adjudication
-
Weigh complex evidence and apply relevant law and codes
-
Conduct investigations and conciliations (including multi-party matters)
-
Provide technical guidance and coaching to dispute resolution staff
-
Contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement
You will manage a caseload of approximately 10 matters at a time. Some cases may resolve within a day; others may take up to a month. The work is detailed, technical and intellectually demanding, requiring sound judgement and strong written reasoning.
The Team
You’ll join a small, collaborative team who are regarded as subject matter experts within the organisation. The culture is supportive, closely mentored and values independent thinking.
-
High trust and autonomy
-
Strong peer collaboration — ideas are tested and refined together
-
Clear expectations and high standards
-
A manager who is direct, values integrity and professionalism, and fosters accountability
This team plays a critical role in maintaining gravity, probity and independence in decision-making.
About You
We are looking for someone with a strong legal mindset who can balance technical rigour with practical clarity.
You will bring:
-
Experience drafting complex written decisions, briefs or reports
-
Ability to distil complicated issues into clear, accessible reasoning (not 20-page legal essays — clear, structured decisions)
-
Strong analytical skills — weighing evidence, identifying benchmarks, applying fair and reasonable principles
-
Sound understanding of administrative law and procedural fairness
-
Experience in dispute resolution, ombudsman schemes or regulatory environments
-
High attention to detail without losing sight of material issues
-
Professional judgement and independence
A law degree is desirable but not essential. Experience as a solicitor, barrister, in dispute resolution, regulatory environments or similar will be highly regarded. Telecommunications experience is beneficial but not required.
This role will suit someone who enjoys complex reasoning and decision writing — not pure investigative work.
Working Arrangements & Benefits

-

-
