Linux and Unix Specialist Salary: $750-950 daily rate Location: Parramatta, NSW A NSW Government Agency is seeking a highly skilled Linux and Unix Specialist to join their dedicated technology team in Parramatta, NSW. You will be part of a knowledgeable and supportive group, where your expertise will contribute directly to the reliability and efficiency of critical infrastructure.

What you'll do:

As a Linux and Unix Specialist, you will play a pivotal role in maintaining the stability and security of mission-critical systems. Your day-to-day activities will involve collaborating with various teams to deliver dependable solutions tailored to organisational needs. You will be responsible for monitoring system health, troubleshooting complex issues swiftly, developing thorough documentation for processes, supporting upgrades and integrations of new technologies, participating in disaster recovery planning, contributing to capacity planning initiatives, automating operational tasks for greater efficiency, ensuring strict compliance with security protocols through regular audits, and providing exceptional technical support to colleagues. Success in this role requires not only deep technical expertise but also strong interpersonal skills that enable you to build trust within the team and across departments.

  • Provide expert administration, configuration, and maintenance of Linux and Unix systems to ensure optimal performance and security across all platforms.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams to deliver reliable solutions that meet organisational requirements and support business objectives.
  • Monitor system health proactively, troubleshoot issues efficiently, and implement effective resolutions to minimise downtime and maintain service continuity.
  • Develop comprehensive documentation for system processes, configurations, and procedures to facilitate knowledge sharing within the team.
  • Support the implementation of upgrades, patches, and new technologies by evaluating compatibility and ensuring seamless integration into existing environments.
  • Participate in disaster recovery planning by designing robust backup strategies and testing failover procedures regularly.
  • Contribute to capacity planning efforts by analysing usage trends and recommending scalable solutions that align with future growth needs.
  • Assist in automating routine tasks using scripting languages such as Bash or Python to improve operational efficiency.
  • Ensure compliance with security policies by conducting regular audits, applying best practices, and responding promptly to vulnerabilities.
  • Provide responsive technical support to internal stakeholders, fostering positive relationships through clear communication and dependable service.

  • Demonstrated experience administering Linux and Unix operating systems in enterprise environments with a focus on reliability and security.
  • Proficiency in shell scripting (Bash) or other automation tools such as Python to streamline operations and reduce manual workload.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, firewalls, VPNs, routing protocols, and troubleshooting connectivity issues.
  • Experience implementing system upgrades, patches, backups, disaster recovery plans, and failover procedures within large-scale infrastructures.
  • Ability to develop clear documentation for technical processes that enhances knowledge sharing among team members.
  • Strong analytical skills for diagnosing complex problems quickly while maintaining composure under pressure.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities enabling you to collaborate effectively with colleagues from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to continuous learning demonstrated by staying up-to-date with emerging technologies relevant to Linux/Unix environments.
  • Familiarity with ITIL practices or similar frameworks for incident management is desirable but not mandatory.
  • Previous experience supporting government agencies or public sector organisations is advantageous.
