Senior/Associate - Public Liability
This position sits within the firm’s Public Liability practice group and involves managing a varied caseload of claims from initial instruction through to resolution. You will work closely with senior lawyers and team leaders to provide advice, prepare claims, negotiate settlements and, where necessary, litigate matters in court. The role suits a lawyer who enjoys client contact, detailed factual analysis, and using strategic litigation to achieve practical outcomes for injured individuals.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage a file load of public liability claims, from investigation and liability assessment through to settlement or hearing.
- Interview clients and witnesses to obtain instructions and gather evidence.
- Draft pleadings, statements, and other court documents.
- Obtain expert reports and liaise with medical and liability experts.
- Prepare detailed advices on liability, quantum, and procedural strategy.
- Represent clients in mediations and informal settlement conferences.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues across the firm’s compensation teams.
- Maintain accurate time recording and ensure compliance with professional and ethical standards.
Skills & Experience
Essential:
- Admitted as a solicitor in Australia (with a current practising certificate).
- 3 years’ post-admission experience in personal injury or public liability litigation.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex legal advice in plain English.
- Empathetic client manner and the ability to manage sensitive cases.
- Solid organisational skills and attention to detail.
- A genuine commitment to achieving fair outcomes for plaintiffs.
Desirable:
- Experience managing a file load independently under supervision.
- Familiarity with personal injury legislation and pre-litigation procedures.
- Exposure to occupiers’ liability, product liability, or catastrophic injury claims.
