Lawyer - Environment and Planning

A leading national law firm is seeking a talented Environment & Planning Associate to join its highly regarded practice in Melbourne or Sydney. This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer looking to work on complex, high-impact matters at the intersection of development, infrastructure, and environmental regulation.

The team advises major corporates, developers, government agencies, and infrastructure proponents on strategic planning, environmental approvals, and regulatory compliance for significant projects across Australia. You will work closely with experienced partners and senior lawyers who are recognised leaders in the environment and planning space.

The Opportunity

This role is suited to an Associate with 3–6 years’ post-admission experience in environment and planning law or a related regulatory practice. You will gain exposure to a broad range of matters, including:

• Planning approvals and development assessments
• Environmental impact assessments and approvals
• Advisory work relating to state and federal environmental legislation
• Major infrastructure, energy, and renewables projects
• Planning and environment litigation and tribunal proceedings
• Contaminated land, remediation, and compliance matters
• Regulatory investigations and enforcement action

You will be involved throughout the project lifecycle, from early strategy and approvals through to dispute resolution where required.

About You

You will ideally have:

• 3–6 years’ PQE in environment and planning law or related regulatory practice
• Experience advising on planning approvals or environmental compliance
• Exposure to planning tribunals or environmental litigation (highly regarded)
• Strong drafting, advisory, and analytical skills
• Ability to manage complex matters and deadlines
• Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
• A collaborative, proactive approach and interest in environmental regulation
