A05 Senior Finance Officer

Save job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Finance Officer to join a highly respected public sector organisation based in the heart of Brisbane CBD. You will be welcomed into a supportive and knowledgeable team, where your expertise in financial reconciliations, and reporting will be valued and nurtured. The role is for a 6 month contract initially with the possibility of extension.

What you'll do:

As a Senior Finance Officer, you will play an integral role within a dedicated finance team responsible for upholding the highest standards of accuracy and compliance in all aspects of financial management. Your day-to-day activities will involve preparing detailed reconciliations, managing journal entries, developing working papers, and ensuring that all processes align with established policies. You will work closely with colleagues from various units to prepare statutory financial statements that meet rigorous legislative requirements. Your expertise in SAP and Excel will be crucial as you compile data for reports that inform key decisions. In addition to technical tasks, you will have ample opportunity to contribute ideas for improving operational policies and procedures. By liaising effectively with clients and team members alike, you will help foster an environment built on trust, collaboration, and shared success. Your commitment to maintaining high standards will ensure that all documentation is accurate, accessible, and compliant with departmental guidelines.

  • Prepare comprehensive financial reconciliations, raise journal entries, and develop detailed working papers while implementing robust policies, systems, procedures, and practices to maintain the accuracy of the general ledger and budget development systems.
  • Contribute significantly to the preparation of both general purpose and specific purpose financial statements in strict accordance with Australian Accounting Standards as well as relevant legislation and guidelines.
  • Apply your thorough understanding of the Financial Accountability Act 2009, Financial Management Practice Manual, accounting standards, and Commonwealth funding policies to ensure compliance across all activities.
  • Utilise advanced skills in information reporting software alongside other programs to compile accurate data and provide essential budgetary and financial management support to internal stakeholders.
  • Assist with the creation, review, and implementation of effective financial and operational policies and procedures that enhance departmental efficiency.
  • Support the preparation and maintenance of desk manuals along with other administrative documents to ensure consistency in processes across the unit.
  • Deliver precise word processing, spreadsheet analysis, and database support using appropriate software tools while adhering strictly to departmental standards.
  • Collaborate on the development of new financial management practices that facilitate improved outcomes for the department’s operations.
  • Liaise proactively with clients and colleagues to understand their needs fully and contribute thoughtfully to timely responses for client inquiries.
  • Actively participate in team success by following departmental protocols, demonstrating responsibility whether working independently or collaboratively.

What you bring:

To excel as a Senior Finance Officer in this role, you will bring proven experience gained within complex finance environments—ideally within government or large-scale organisations—where accuracy is paramount. Your background should include hands-on involvement in preparing reconciliations, journal entries, statutory accounts preparation under Australian Accounting Standards, as well as familiarity with relevant legislative frameworks. Advanced SAP skills are essential; you should feel comfortable navigating its modules for reporting purposes. Similarly strong Excel capabilities are required for data compilation and analysis. Beyond technical expertise, your ability to communicate clearly—both verbally when liaising with stakeholders or clients—and in writing when producing guidance materials or process documentation will set you apart. You thrive when collaborating within teams but are equally dependable when entrusted with independent responsibilities. Above all else, your commitment to upholding best practice standards ensures that every task contributes positively towards organisational objectives.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing complex financial reconciliations, journal entries, working papers, and supporting documentation within a large organisation or government setting.
  • Comprehensive understanding of Australian Accounting Standards as well as relevant legislation such as the Financial Accountability Act 2009 and Financial Management Practice Manual.
  • Proven ability to use SAP at an advanced level for financial management tasks including data extraction, analysis, reconciliation, and reporting.
  • High-level proficiency in Microsoft Excel for compiling data sets, creating spreadsheets, performing analyses, and presenting findings clearly.
  • Experience utilising information reporting software alongside other business applications to support budgeting processes and deliver accurate management information.
  • Strong written communication skills demonstrated through preparing desk manuals or similar administrative documents that support consistent practice across teams.
  • Excellent interpersonal abilities enabling you to liaise effectively with clients and colleagues from diverse backgrounds while responding sensitively to their needs.
  • A collaborative approach combined with reliability when working both independently or as part of a wider team environment focused on shared goals.
  • Commitment to continuous improvement through active participation in policy development initiatives aimed at enhancing organisational effectiveness.
