Cyber Security Engineer - Technical Lead

A hands-on, Senior Technical Cyber Security Engineer at a leading University in Sydney. The successful candidate will be leading the design and implementation of technical controls aligned with the ACSC Essential 8.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead the design and implementation of technical controls aligned with the ACSC Essential 8.
• Develop a technical remediation roadmap based on a detailed gap analysis against current maturity levels.
• Collaborate with infrastructure, endpoint, and application teams to embed E8 & NIST controls into enterprise systems.
• Define and enforce technical standards and configuration baselines (e.g., application whitelisting, patching cadence, macro controls, admin privilege management).
• Support uplift to Maturity Level 1 or 2, depending on risk profile and asset classification.
• Provide technical guidance to stakeholders and ensure alignment with security policies and standards.
• Ensure monitoring and reporting mechanisms are in place to track control effectiveness.

Essential Criteria:

• Proven experience leading the technical implementation of the ACSC Essential 8 in complex enterprise environments, ideally in higher education, state, or federal government organisations.
• Strong background in Windows environments, endpoint protection, Active Directory, vulnerability management tools, and application hardening.
• Familiarity with the Australian Government Information Security Manual (ISM).
• Experience working with SOC, SecOps, and ICT infrastructure teams.
• Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
