A05 Finance Business Partner
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Finance Business Partner to join a highly respected public sector organisation based in Brisbane CBD. This permanent, full-time position offers you the chance to make a meaningful impact by supporting essential services that benefit communities across Queensland. You will be part of a dedicated team within Corporate Finance, where your expertise will help shape financial strategies and provide high-level advice to senior leaders.
What you'll do:
As a Finance Business Partner, you will play a central role in supporting senior executives with expert financial guidance that underpins effective decision-making across multiple divisions. Your day-to-day activities will involve preparing comprehensive management accounting reports, conducting thorough analyses of budgetary trends, and advising on both routine operations and special projects such as State Budget submissions. You will collaborate closely with colleagues at all levels—building trusted relationships with stakeholders inside and outside the department—to ensure timely sharing of critical financial insights. By championing continuous improvement initiatives, you will help refine governance frameworks while contributing positively to a culture focused on fairness, customer service excellence, and innovation. Your ability to navigate complex scenarios with sensitivity will be crucial as you balance competing priorities in a dynamic public sector environment.
- Assist Senior and Principal Finance Business Partners in delivering high-level professional financial advice to senior managers within specific divisions as well as the broader Finance Directorate.
- Support the preparation, review, and submission of management accounting reports and advisory services in line with legislative requirements and Queensland Treasury obligations.
- Conduct independent analytical reviews, forecasts, and provide guidance on budgetary matters including State Budget submissions and stand-alone funding proposals.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives by analysing divisional financial performance and governance processes to identify areas for enhancement.
- Develop strong collaborative relationships with internal and external stakeholders to facilitate the sharing of relevant financial information and advice on service delivery issues.
- Contribute actively to creating an environment that values customer service excellence, equity, fairness, innovation, and high-quality service delivery.
- Navigate complex or ambiguous situations by synthesising stakeholder perspectives and using sound judgement to inform recommendations.
- Provide accurate, impartial advice while engaging in ongoing improvement of work practices, systems, and processes within the finance function.
- Support resource allocation decisions through detailed analysis of financial data and performance metrics relevant to departmental objectives.
What you bring:
Your background as a Finance Business Partner equips you with the technical knowledge required for high-level advisory roles within large organisations, particularly those operating in the public sector. You bring proven experience managing complex budgets underpinned by robust analytical capabilities that allow you to interpret data accurately while identifying trends or risks. Your interpersonal strengths enable you to foster trust-based relationships across diverse teams; you listen carefully to different perspectives before synthesising information into actionable insights. With a commitment to continuous improvement at your core, you are always looking for ways to refine processes so they better serve both internal clients and broader organisational goals.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within teams as well as independently when delivering high-quality financial information and advice aligned with organisational objectives.
- Proven experience preparing, reviewing, and submitting management accounting reports in accordance with relevant legislation and Queensland Treasury standards.
- Strong analytical skills enabling you to conduct independent reviews of budgets, forecasts, and financial performance while identifying opportunities for process improvements.
- Excellent interpersonal skills for building productive relationships with diverse internal and external stakeholders; able to understand differing viewpoints and synthesise information effectively.
- Capacity to provide clear rationale for recommendations by drawing upon analysis, experience, empathy, and sound judgement when making informed decisions.
- Commitment to providing accurate, impartial advice while continuously seeking ways to enhance work practices within the finance function.
- Ability to adapt quickly in complex or ambiguous environments by demonstrating resilience and sensitivity towards political or operational risks.
- A degree or equivalent qualification in accounting, commerce or business administration is highly regarded; membership of a professional body such as CPA Australia (CPA), Chartered Accountants Australia & New Zealand (CA), or Institute of Public Accountants (IPA) would be advantageous but not mandatory
