About the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training

The department’s purpose is to build Queensland’s future workforce through connecting all Queenslanders to learning opportunities, quality training, employment opportunities and by helping small businesses to start and thrive.

Service areas:

The Department of Employment, Small Business and Training will deliver the following services in 2023-24.

  • Connecting and supporting Queenslanders with employment programs and services. To increase employment opportunities for all Queenslanders, in particular disadvantaged cohorts, in partnership with industry, employers and communities through the delivery of targeted employment support programs.
  • Connecting Queensland small businesses to grants and support programs.
    To ensure small businesses can seamlessly interact with government and are supported to start, grow, and thrive.
  • Connecting Queenslanders to training and skills programs and initiatives.
    To regulate Queensland apprenticeships and traineeships and facilitate access to and participation in vocational education and training pathways, enabling Queenslanders to gain employment in current and future industries.

About the Director-General role

As Director-General of the Department of Employment, Small Business and Training you will play a significant role in influencing the execution and successful delivery of the Queensland Government objectives for the community that reflect the government’s vision for Queensland and outline our plan to build future prosperity and growth across the state.

Chief executives lead a public service committed to providing the highest standard of impartial, evidence-based advice to their Minister and government in a Westminster-style system.

Accountable to the Premier of Queensland and reporting to the responsible Minister, you will contribute to:

  • Better jobs, better services and better lifestyles for Queenslanders 
  • Lead by setting a strategic vision focused leadership
  • Effect change to transform the implementation of policies, priorities, services or programs of the elected government.

Head of Public Sector, Brisbane

Recently joining Robert Walters, Samantha brings over 14 years of leadership experience in business and recruitment, focusing on Federal, State, and Local Government sectors. With a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and an MBA specialising in leadership, Samantha aims to elevate and align our public sector services with Robert Walters Group's broader service lines, emphasising excellence and innovation.

Throughout her career, Samantha has driven transformative change within governmental organisations, working with clients such as the ATO, Queensland Treasury, and Brisbane City Council. She has also led impactful Executive Coaching/Strategy workshops for entities including the Torres Strait Regional Authority and the NDIA. Samantha's prior success in establishing and leading the Public Sector division at a boutique Executive Search Firm demonstrates her ability to drive positive change and foster innovation.
