A company in the government sector based in Adelaide CBD is seeking a Financial Accountant to join their dedicated Finance team. What you'll do:

As a Financial Accountant based in Adelaide CBD, you will play a pivotal role in supporting the organisation’s financial operations. Your day-to-day responsibilities will involve facilitating payments for superannuation and pension benefits, processing general ledger entries, reconciling accounts, maintaining registers, co-ordinating invoice management, providing expert advice to stakeholders, liaising with relevant parties on unit pricing matters, assisting with report preparation for both internal use and regulatory requirements, as well as contributing to annual financial statements. You will also handle tax returns and compliance reporting while identifying opportunities for process improvements.

  • Facilitate the payment of superannuation and pension benefits by managing electronic transfers from administration systems and ensuring receipt of contribution monies.
  • Process general ledger journals with accuracy, maintaining up-to-date records that underpin reliable financial reporting.
  • Monitor and ensure the timely recording and banking of all superannuation monies, safeguarding organisational assets through diligent oversight.
  • Reconcile bank accounts and other superannuation transactions regularly to maintain financial integrity and transparency.
  • Maintain various registers related to financial activities, ensuring data is current and accessible for internal stakeholders.
  • Co-ordinate requests for invoices, raise invoices efficiently, and manage coding and payment processes to support smooth business operations.
  • Provide advice to internal clients and external stakeholders on accounting matters, fostering trust through clear communication and responsive service.
  • Assist in preparing regular internal and external reports as well as data documentation required for regulatory reporting periods.
  • Contribute to the preparation of annual/quarterly financial statements, monthly IAS, quarterly BAS, annual tax returns, compliance reporting, technical accounting papers, and commentary on scheme performance.

What you bring:

The ideal candidate for the Financial Accountant position brings proven experience in complex financial environments where accuracy is essential. Your background includes maintaining general ledgers, preparing reconciliations/reports with detailed analysis of scheme performance, handling statutory returns/tax compliance obligations confidently. You have demonstrated skill in preparing technical papers that inform decision-making processes. Your interpersonal abilities allow you to connect effectively with colleagues across business units as well as external stakeholders including auditors or government agencies. You are committed to identifying areas for process improvement, whether through technology or policy enhancements, and actively contribute towards best practice development within finance teams. Staying abreast of evolving accounting standards/regulatory requirements is second nature; you respond thoughtfully when changes arise.

  • Demonstrated experience in delivering accurate financial services within a complex organisational environment where attention to detail is paramount.
  • Proven ability to assist in maintaining general ledgers and related database systems with precision and reliability.
  • Experience preparing month-end reconciliations, reports with insightful commentary on scheme performance, as well as annual/quarterly financial statements in accordance with accounting standards.
  • Familiarity with preparing monthly IAS, quarterly BAS, annual tax returns, compliance reporting to regulatory bodies such as the Australian Taxation Office.
  • Ability to prepare technical accounting papers that analyse financial data trends influencing performance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills enabling effective liaison with business units, government departments such as Treasury & Finance, clients, auditors during year-end audits.
  • Capacity to identify business process or system improvement opportunities that enhance efficiency or compliance within finance functions.
  • Commitment to developing best practices in policies/procedures alongside continuous improvement initiatives within tax governance frameworks.
  • Up-to-date knowledge of accounting standards/government reporting requirements affecting organisational operations; ability to formulate appropriate actions when changes occur.
