Head of IT

The Head of IT will own the corporate technology environment and provide strategic guidance on the systems, platforms, services and controls required to reach a secure, scalable and fit for purpose end state. The role will direct managed service providers, suppliers and specialist partners, while retaining clear internal accountability for service quality, security, architecture, cost, risk and business outcomes.

Required: Experience as an IT leader to establish & transform an IT function in an infrastructure, telecomms, engineering, construction or transport business.

• Define the IT strategy, operating model, service catalogue, governance, controls and delivery roadmap.
• Own the corporate technology and systems environment while outsourcing, directing and holding providers accountable for delivery.
• Oversee new starter technology readiness, ensuring hardware, software, accounts, access and support are coordinated through the right providers and in place on time.
• Strengthen cyber security, information protection, technology risk management and compliance practices
• Improve the employee technology experience and day-to-day service reliability.
• Build practical governance for technology investment, assets, licences, data, vendors, projects and change.
• Stay close enough to delivery to guide priorities, resolve issues and step into practical work where required in a lean, fast-moving organisation.

Key Responsibilities

• IT strategy and function establishment: Define the technology direction, target state, IT operating model, service catalogue, processes, controls, standards, documentation and delivery roadmap.
• Technology roadmap and advisory: Provide strategic advice to executive and business leaders on the systems, platforms, service model and investment decisions required to reach the desired technology end state.
• Outsourced delivery and supplier management: Select, contract, onboard, direct and performance-manage managed service providers, software vendors, hardware suppliers and specialist advisers.
• Corporate platforms and applications: Set direction for the corporate application portfolio, licensing, administration, integration, access and lifecycle decisions, with delivery support from internal and external providers.
• Cyber security, identity and resilience: Establish proportionate controls for identity, access, endpoint protection, monitoring, backup, recovery, incident response and employee awareness.
• Technology governance, risk and reporting: Maintain policies, control frameworks, risk registers, architecture principles, decision rights and executive reporting.
• Commercial, project and change oversight: Manage IT budgets, purchasing, licences, renewals, projects, migrations, communications, training and benefits tracking through a disciplined outsourced delivery model.
• Workforce technology enablement: Oversee the delivery of suitable hardware, software, accounts, access and support for employees and contractors, ensuring onboarding and offboarding are coordinated securely through the appropriate providers.

Ideal candidate

• Demonstrated ability to define and govern corporate IT services across end-user computing, collaboration platforms, applications, identity, infrastructure, service management, cyber security, data, vendors and technology governance.
• Strong experience leading outsourced IT services, managed service providers and technology suppliers, including setting expectations, monitoring performance and holding vendors accountable.
• Proven ability to support workforce growth by overseeing technology procurement, provisioning, onboarding, access management, support and offboarding through effective internal processes and external delivery partners.
• Strong cyber security and technology risk capability, including controls, incident response, resilience, backup and recovery, awareness and executive reporting.
• Clear and credible communicator who can translate technical issues into business impacts, decisions and actions.
• Self-sufficient, organised and commercially minded, with the ability to move between strategy, governance, supplier direction and selective practical execution when required.
• Experience with Microsoft 365, cloud services, identity and access management, endpoint management, collaboration tools and common business applications is highly desirable.
• Experience in regulated, critical infrastructure, telecommunications or security-sensitive environments is highly desirable.
