Returning Stronger: A Journey of Growth and Progression
Zak Wunhym’s journey of career advancement and his return to Robert Walters as Managing Consultant.
At 27, Zak Wunhym brings a dynamic energy to his professional life. Initially drawn to teaching with a Bachelor of Education, he soon found his passion in recruitment. "My love for connecting with people and motivating them really pushed me toward recruitment." Zak explains. The ability to build relationships and inspire others has been key to his rapid career progression at Robert Walters, where his enthusiasm continues to drive his success.
Coming home to Robert Walters
Zak’s journey with Robert Walters began in 2021. Over the next two years, he quickly progressed from Associate Consultant to Consultant and then Senior Consultant. But like many driven professionals, Zak felt the need to explore new opportunities, stepping away from Robert Walters for 15 months. However, it wasn’t long before he found his way back, recently rejoining the team as a Managing Consultant in Melbourne.
I’d been with Robert Walters for two years before taking some time to try something new. But returning feels like coming home. The growth I’ve experienced here is unmatched—both professionally and personally.
The journey of growth and support
Zak’s time at Robert Walters has been marked by continuous growth, supported by tailored training and development opportunities.
“The support has been highly individualised from day one. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach here—training is personalised to your level and needs. The open communication with senior leaders makes it an ideal environment for growth and collaboration.” Zak explains.
After starting as an Associate Consultant, Zak was introduced to the fundamentals of recruitment. With the support of his colleagues and the company’s comprehensive training programs, he quickly learned the value of relationship-building and mastering the recruitment process.
What sets Robert Walters apart
When asked what brings him the most satisfaction at work, Zak points to two key aspects: the global platform and the people.
“The global reach of Robert Walters is something special,” he says. “It gives you the opportunity to connect with clients and candidates across diverse markets, which is invaluable. But it’s the people here that truly make it a great place to work—the culture is built on collaboration and support.”
Balancing work and life
In addition to his professional growth, Zak acknowledges how working at Robert Walters has positively impacted his personal life.
It’s brought a lot of structure and maturity to my life. It’s not just about developing your career; it’s about growing as a person.
Zak keeps balanced and focused with regular runs, a routine that fuels his energy both on and off the job.
Advice for aspiring recruiters
Zak’s advice for those considering a career at Robert Walters is simple:
Recruitment can be a roller coaster, but it’s important to celebrate every win, no matter how big or small.
And when it comes to the benefits, Zak points to two standouts: the clear progression structure and the Mortgage Contribution Benefit, which has made a significant impact.
