GIS Data Analyst

Save job

An exciting opportunity awaits for you to join a forward-thinking local government organisation as a GIS Data Analyst, where your expertise in spatial data will directly influence strategic business decisions and community outcomes. This full-time position contract offers the chance to work within a supportive team that values knowledge sharing, professional growth, and a commitment to public service excellence.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and deliver comprehensive spatial business intelligence solutions including detailed reports and both electronic and hardcopy maps that underpin critical business processes and inform strategic decision-making.
  • Provide expert analysis and integration of spatial and related aspatial data to create robust spatial datasets required for effective delivery of business intelligence solutions.
  • Work collaboratively with business analysts and a wide range of internal customers to accurately define requirements for spatial business intelligence initiatives.
  • Support and maintain the spatial business intelligence framework as well as associated solutions to ensure their effective use and continuity of service throughout the organisation.
  • Offer specialist advice regarding the interpretation and application of spatial datasets to facilitate informed business decisions at all levels.
  • Assist in determining policies for information access rights, issuing these rights, and implementing robust access controls in line with organisational standards.
  • Contribute to coordinated change management activities by supporting the direction, organisation, and implementation of project portfolios that achieve significant outcomes for the organisation.
  • Participate actively in the Data Stewardship Working Group to promote best practices in data management policy, guidelines, and the adoption of a data quality approach across the council.
  • Ensure compliance with statutory obligations, ethical standards, privacy principles, corporate policies, customer service charters, and workplace health and safety guidelines.

The ideal candidate

  • Demonstrated high level of achievement using GIS software for analysing spatial information and developing advanced spatial business intelligence solutions within a local government or similar context.
  • Comprehensive understanding of key spatial datasets relevant to local government operations—including property, infrastructure assets, environmental factors, land use planning, and aerial imagery—and how these datasets support strategic objectives.
  • Proven ability to support and maintain complex spatial business intelligence technologies including spatial databases, delivery mechanisms for various client types (thick/thin/mobile), and sophisticated data integration tools.
  • Advanced proficiency in cartographic design and visual communication using a variety of software platforms such as GIS applications, Computer Aided Design tools, desktop publishing suites, graphics programs, and image manipulation software.
  • Highly developed analytical skills demonstrated through successful resolution of intricate spatial data management challenges including issues related to data quality and topology.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with an emphasis on clear written and verbal communication; ability to work collaboratively with peers as well as stakeholders from diverse backgrounds.
  • Commitment to upholding statutory obligations, ethical standards, privacy principles, corporate policies, customer service charters, and workplace health & safety protocols.
  • Ability to participate constructively in change management initiatives by supporting project coordination efforts that deliver measurable benefits for the organisation.
  • Mandatory: Ability to pass a criminal history check prior to appointment.
  • Desirable: Tertiary qualifications in Spatial Sciences or a related discipline.
