Data Specialist

A leading government organisation in Brisbane is seeking a Data Analytics Specialist to join their team. This role offers you the opportunity to transform and optimise cost modelling processes, directly impacting regulatory commitments and operational excellence.

Roles and Responsibilities

• Engage with business, finance, regulatory, technology, and data stakeholders to understand objectives, decision needs, pain points, data sources, controls, and requirements for cost modelling and reporting.
• Assess and document current data models, calculation logic, data flows, dependencies, assumptions, controls, and reporting processes to ensure alignment with regulatory commitments.
• Profile, clean, transform, and integrate structured and unstructured data from multiple sources while resolving quality issues and establishing repeatable validation controls.
• Redesign and simplify cost models, data structures, and analytical workflows using fit-for-purpose data management techniques alongside statistical and cloud technologies.
• Automate data ingestion, transformation, modelling, quality assurance, and reporting activities to reduce manual effort and improve timeliness while minimising operational risk.
• Monitor solution performance and data quality by identifying continuous improvement opportunities that balance customer needs with commercial, operational, strategic, risk, and regulatory considerations.
• Collaborate closely with stakeholders to elicit requirements effectively while building trust and resolving competing priorities through clear communication.
• Select and apply modern data platforms such as Microsoft Azure or comparable technologies to enhance workflow automation and business intelligence capabilities.
• Document technical solutions thoroughly to preserve transparency, traceability, and business meaning throughout all stages of the project lifecycle.
• Present complex analytical concepts clearly to non-technical audiences using excellent written, verbal, visualisation, and presentation skills.

The Ideal Candidate

• Advanced analytical capability including statistics, model design, validation optimisation skills coupled with the ability to simplify complex approaches for broader understanding.
• Demonstrated proficiency in data modelling techniques as well as engineering concepts such as pipelines transformation integration quality management metadata handling.
• Experience selecting modern platforms like Microsoft Azure SQL Server Power BI or similar tools for workflow automation business intelligence enhancement.
• Exceptional stakeholder engagement skills enabling you to build trust influence senior leaders resolve competing priorities through effective facilitation.
• Excellent written verbal visualisation presentation abilities allowing you to explain technical concepts trade-offs clearly even when addressing non-technical audiences.
• Mandatory: A tertiary qualification in data science computer science analytics econometrics or related quantitative discipline or equivalent professional experience.
• Mandatory: At least five years’ relevant experience delivering advanced analytics modelling engineering decision-support solutions within complex organisational environments.
• Mandatory: Demonstrated experience reviewing existing models translating stakeholder needs into technical requirements designing testing documenting implementing simplified controlled maintainable solutions.
