Senior Project Officer – WHS Governance & Compliance

What you'll do:

As a Senior Project Officer Workplace Health and Safety Governance and Compliance based in Brisbane, you will be responsible for orchestrating the activities of regional governance committees while ensuring that safety frameworks are applied uniformly across all service streams. Your day-to-day work will involve leading critical alignment projects with ISO standards, managing consultation hubs for policy updates, drafting impactful safety communications based on data trends, and conducting thorough risk assessments. Success in this role requires you to nurture supportive relationships with Health and Safety Representatives by providing guidance on election processes and training compliance. You will also facilitate stakeholder engagement at multiple levels, oversee documentation accuracy, restart suspended initiatives with renewed energy, and collaborate closely with various teams to shape the organisation’s approach to workplace health and safety communication. Your efforts will directly contribute to creating a safer environment where every team member feels supported.

• Coordinate Tier 1 and Tier 2 Workplace Health and Safety Governance Committees across multiple regions to ensure consistent framework application.
• Lead the ISO 45001/45003 alignment project, implementing audit recommendations to improve physical and psychosocial risk management systems.
• Manage the Workplace Health and Safety consultation hub, regularly updating policies, procedures, registers, and ensuring clear communication under WHS Act/Regulation requirements.
• Coach, mentor, and support more than 86 Health and Safety Representatives by managing election frameworks and maintaining training compliance.
• Draft proactive safety alerts, bulletins, and toolbox talks informed by trend analysis to promote awareness of emerging risks.
• Coordinate baseline and activity-based Workplace Health and Safety risk assessments to identify hazards and implement effective controls.
• Facilitate multi-tiered stakeholder engagement through mentoring HSRs and supporting committee operations.
• Oversee documentation processes to ensure accuracy, transparency, and accessibility for all stakeholders.
• Support suspended safety initiatives by restarting projects and maintaining momentum through strong project management practices.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop comprehensive WHS communication doctrine that aligns with organisational goals.

• Demonstrated expertise in Workplace Health and Safety governance frameworks with a deep understanding of legislative compliance under WHS Act & Regulations.
• Comprehensive knowledge of ISO 45001/45003 standards as they relate to physical and psychosocial risk management systems within large organisations.
• Exceptional project management skills enabling you to restart suspended initiatives effectively while maintaining momentum throughout their lifecycle.
• Proven stakeholder engagement capability including mentoring Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs) across multiple tiers of governance committees.
• Experience developing baseline safety risk assessments as well as activity-based evaluations tailored to specific operational needs.
• Strong background in drafting clear, proactive WHS communications such as safety alerts, bulletins, toolbox talks informed by trend analysis.
• Ability to manage complex documentation processes ensuring accuracy, transparency, accessibility for all relevant parties.
• Capacity for facilitating multi-tiered committee operations through co-operative leadership approaches that foster inclusivity.
