Data Engineer

Data Engineer: 6–12 month contract with potential to extend. Seeking a Data Engineer with GCP (or transferable cloud) and DBT experience, strong data modelling and platform engineering capabilities. Experience with large datasets and scale-up environments preferred. Requires a balance of hands-on technical delivery, stakeholder engagement and supporting business data use cases.

About the Opportunity

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Data Engineer to join a growing, data-driven retail media business backed by a major national organisation. Combining the resources and stability of a large corporate environment with the pace, flexibility and entrepreneurial energy of a scale-up, the business is continuing to develop its data capabilities and platform.

This role will sit across both data modelling and platform engineering, with an approximate 50/50 split between the two. You will work closely with technical teams, product stakeholders and business functions to build and improve data capabilities, support new use cases and deliver meaningful commercial insights.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain scalable data pipelines and data infrastructure.

• Undertake hands-on data modelling, ensuring data is structured, reliable and accessible for business use.

• Contribute to the development and optimisation of the organisation's data platform.

• Work with large and complex datasets to support reporting, analytics and business intelligence requirements.

• Build and maintain data transformation workflows using DBT.

• Support the development and delivery of data use cases across multiple business functions.

• Partner with Product, Engineering and business stakeholders to understand requirements and translate them into technical solutions.

• Work with financial performance metrics and commercial data to support business decision-making.

• Contribute to conversational analytics and the development of data-driven insights.

• Identify opportunities to improve data quality, platform performance and engineering processes.

Required Experience & Skills

• Strong commercial experience as a Data Engineer, ideally within a modern cloud data environment.

• Experience working with Google Cloud Platform (GCP). Candidates with AWS or Azure experience will also be considered if they can demonstrate the ability to adapt to new cloud environments.

• Practical experience with DBT, including data transformation and modelling.

• Strong data modelling capabilities, with the ability to design and structure data to support different business requirements.

• Experience building, maintaining and optimising data pipelines and platforms.

• Exposure to large datasets and complex data environments is advantageous.

• Strong SQL and general data engineering capabilities.

• Ability to balance hands-on platform engineering with data modelling responsibilities.

• Comfortable working with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Ideal Background

The ideal candidate will have experience working within a start-up, scale-up or evolving technology environment, where adaptability, initiative and the ability to operate outside established processes are important.

Experience within media, retail media, advertising, digital or other data-heavy industries would be advantageous, although candidates from other sectors will be considered.

Candidates coming exclusively from large enterprise environments may still be suitable, provided they can demonstrate an adaptable and hands-on approach.
