Dre 'MoZzi' Ngatokorua's Journey from beats to brilliance on the Fringe Stage

Embark on the vibrant journey of Dre 'MoZzi' Ngatokorua, a radio journalist at Umeewarra Media, whose artistic evolution from the DJ decks of the Fringe Club to the immersive stages of Port Augusta's Desert Fringe has been nothing short of extraordinary.

In 2020, Dre courageously took center stage with his inaugural Fringe production, "MoZzi x Inkatja." Reflecting on its success, Dre shares, "It went great. It sold out, the audience loved it." Fueled by this triumph, he decided to amplify his storytelling prowess by transforming the show into a more immersive and deeply personal experience at 'the Lab.' Little did he foresee the emotional depth this creative journey would unravel.

Drawing on his rich Wangkangurru, Adnyamathanha, Cook Island, and Maori heritage, Dre weaves interactive DJ sets that transform him into his alter ego, MoZzi. This unique blend of cultural influences has become the hallmark of his performances, adding a layer of depth to his storytelling. His show, "MoZzi x Inkatja," not only captivated audiences but also secured a place in the 2021 Adelaide Fringe.

Dre's creative influence extends beyond the Fringe stage, making him a frequent contributor to the Art Gallery of South Australia's Neo program. Additionally, he has been a notable presence at the annual Wilpena Pound New Years event, solidifying his role as a dynamic force in the South Australian arts scene.

In 2021, Dre received the FIRST NATIONS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTOR AWARD from FNMA, recognizing his profound impact on the arts. The ABC celebrated him as a TRAILBLAZER, acknowledging his innovative approach to his craft, while 'WE ALL HAVE YARNS' secured the BEST DRAMA OR COMEDY AWARD from FNMA, solidifying his position as a master storyteller.

The year 2022 marked Dre's inclusion in SOUTH AUSTRALIA'S TOP 40 UNDER 40 by CITYMAG | INDAILY. The RUBY AWARDS bestowed upon him the prestigious STEVIE 'GADLABARTI' GOLDSMITH MEMORIAL AWARD, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the arts. Port Augusta NAIDOC crowned him 'PERSON OF THE YEAR,' underscoring his significance in the local community.

Dre's winning streak continued into 2023, with 'MOZZI X INKATJA: NEW MOON' earning the ATSI FRINGE AWARD at ADELAIDE FRINGE. His dedication to sports coverage in the indigenous community was also acknowledged with the 'NUNGA X' BEST SPORTS COVERAGE award from FNMA.

Expressing gratitude to mentor Cat Beaton, Dre emphasizes, "I would like to give a shout out to Cat Beaton; without her, I wouldn’t have dared to DJ at a Fringe event, let alone do my own Fringe production." This acknowledgment highlights the pivotal role mentorship plays in nurturing creative endeavors.

Adapting seamlessly to the dynamic realm of artistic spaces, Dre remarks, "I’ve learned to adjust to spaces and to work within each environment." This adaptability has undoubtedly contributed to the success of his productions, allowing him to thrive in various settings.

Representation is not just a concept for Dre but a guiding principle shaping his identity and influencing every facet of his work. He emphasizes, "Representation is so important in everything I do. It’s my identity. I’m able to learn, teach, and grow with everyone I work with and show to."

For budding performers, Dre offers invaluable advice, urging them, "Literally get the first one done because your 2nd production is going to become so much better; don’t overthink things and enjoy the moment." This wisdom reflects his belief in the organic growth that comes with experience and underscores the importance of embracing and savoring the creative journey.

As he prepares to unveil "MoZzi x Inkatja: New Moon" at 'The Lab' for three shows on the 7th, 9th, and 10th of March, Dre extends a warm invitation to audiences to witness the unique fusion of storytelling, art, and emotion in his production.
