It’s an amazing feeling when a job combines your professional talents with your personal passion. Just ask Josh Stedman, a proud descendant of the Kamilaroi Tribe, from the Moore region of New South Wales.
“Growing up I was fortunate enough to have strong role models and Elders who shaped who I am today”
Josh has always been passionate about improving the lives of First Nations Peoples; and he’s dedicated his working life to this purpose. “Since I was 14 years old, I was preparing and studying to work in the justice system to support my Mob,” explains Josh. “I spent just shy of seven years as a Coordinator for three Community Justice Groups, and then reached a bit of a crossroads. I wanted to broaden my horizons professionally but also stay true to my values – and then I heard about the chance to work for Blue Card.”
Blue Card Services administers the blue card system – Queensland’s Working with Children Check. The blue card system is a key prevention and monitoring system of people working with children and young people in Queensland. Robert Walters is a long-time recruitment partner for Blue Card, providing hiring and contracting services. When Josh applied for a temporary role with Blue Card, he did so via Robert Walters consultant, Brianna Brutnall.
“From the start, Brianna really listened to me”, says Josh. “There was no ‘hard sell’ to try and convince me to take the role. Instead, Brianna’s priority was to make certain that Blue Card was a good match for my skills, ambitions, and personal values. She talked me through my options and efficiently managed the process and paperwork.”
Like many of his colleagues, Josh remains on a rolling contract via Robert Walters. “Working for Blue Card Services has opened a door to further personal and professional development. Ever since joining, I've felt safe to offer my views and suggestions towards how our department operates. I really feel like my voice is heard. I have thanked and will continue to thank Robert Walters for enabling me to work here.”
Every few weeks, Josh and Brianna still catch up in person to check in, and Josh enjoys participating in Robert Walters regular networking events too. “Within my first weeks of employment, I was fortunate enough to meet other Robert Walters employees within Blue Card Services at internal events organised by Robert Walters. This helped me settle in the job and make some early connections”.
